The Toronto office of Blake, Cassels & Graydon assisted Aliant Telecom, a newly created telecom subsidiary of Aliant Inc., on its re-organization and in establishing a medium-term note program. The first issuance of Notes was completed on October 15, 1999 when RBC Dominion Securities, CIBC World Markets, Nesbitt Burns and Scotia McLeod Inc. acting as agents for Aliant Telecom placed $200 million in Notes. The Blake team was led by Sheila Murray and John Wilkin. Candy Saga and Jennifer Guerard of Tory Haythe represented the Agents. Aliant Inc. is the product of the May 31 $3-billion four-way merger of Atlantic Canada’s regional telcos Bruncor Inc., Island Telecom Inc., Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company Limited, and NewTel Enterprises Limited.
