MDC Corporation Inc. sold A.E. McKenzie Co. Inc. to a management-led private purchaser on July 19, 2002 for an undisclosed amount. McKenzie is a seed packaging and marketing company located in Brandon, Manitoba. The Government of Manitoba ran the company as a crown corporation until selling it in 1994 to a subsidiary of MDC.
The purchaser was represented by Blair Filyk of Meighen, Haddad & Co. MDC was represented by Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, with a team led by John Tuzyk, and assisted by Ian Goldberg (corporate), Dawn Jetten and Rob Willetts (financial services) and Kathleen Penny (tax). John Tuzyk and Ian Goldberg also acted for the MDC subsidiary, which acquired A.E. McKenzie in 1994. Chrys Pappas, Q.C., and Lisa Stiver of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman acted as Manitoba special counsel to MDC.
