TransGlobe Apartment REIT (“TransGlobe REIT”) was acquired by PD Kanco LP and Starlight Investments Ltd. (collectively “Starlight”), a corporation controlled by Daniel Drimmer. The transaction is valued at approximately $2.0 billion, and represents one of the largest REIT transactions in Canada of 2012.
TransGlobe REIT owns a portfolio of 176 residential rental properties containing approximately 21,771 suites in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The transaction consisted of the acquisition of the outstanding trust units of TransGlobe REIT by Starlight for $14.25 in cash per unit, paid to holders through a combination of a special cash distribution and redemption proceeds. The transaction was supported by a consortium consisting of Public Sector Pension Investment Board (“PSP”), Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust and Timbercreek Asset Management Inc., each of which entered into agreements with Starlight to acquire certain of the REIT's properties.
