Mike Richmond is national leader of McMillan’s energy group. His practice focuses on the development, construction, acquisition, financing, and operation of electricity and thermal energy facilities. He has extensive experience advising plant owners, operators, and lenders, while also advising major consumers on their energy strategies. Having played a leading role in the development of over 600 solar, wind, gas-fired, nuclear, geothermal, battery, and district energy projects, he provides guidance on power purchase agreements, project acquisitions and operations, site leases, engineering and construction contracts, grid connections, regulatory approvals, market rule compliance, financings, and dispositions. His previous roles as senior policy advisor to the minister of energy, counsel to a Parliamentary caucus, corporate director of Toronto Hydro, and member of the National Energy Board have given him unique insight into the perspectives of regulators, governments, utilities, and shareholders. This combination of energy law experience and deep regulatory and public policy background has been a proven benefit in advancing his clients’ interests through both contractual and political means.
