Jonathan is Chair of the Blakes national Environmental group and widely regarded as one of Canada's leading environmental lawyers. He represents clients on major project development; the purchase, sale, and remediation of contaminated land; mining regulation and permitting; ESG and sustainability issues, management of natural resources; transportation, handling and disposal of hazardous substances; environmental permitting; air, water and waste regulation; lender liability; and other environmental matters. Jonathan’s wide-ranging expertise also includes representing accused corporations in major environmental prosecutions and providing environmental law advice on significant transactions, across a broad range of industries, including chemical, mining, construction, oil and gas, transportation, general manufacturing, automotive, food and beverage and agribusiness. Jonathan is immediate past Chair of the American Bar Association's Section of Environment, Energy and Resources Law, the first non-American to serve on that organization’s Executive Committee. He is also a former Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Environment, Energy and Resources Law Section.

On December 29, 2017, Mr. Don E. Wall (Don Wall), PHI Inc. (PHI) and HNZ Group Inc. (HNZ), a Toronto Stock Exchange-listed provider of helicopter transportation and related support services, completed a statutory plan of arrangement pursuant to which, among other things, Don Wall, through a beneficially wholly-owned acquisition company, acquired all of the issued and outstanding common shares and variable voting shares of HNZ for $18.70 in cash per share, and PHI subsequently acquired HNZ’s offshore business conducted in New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. The total consideration paid to former holders of HNZ shares was approximately $233 million
On February 16, 2017, Catalent Pharma Solutions Ltd. announced the completion of its purchase of all of the shares of Accucaps Industries Ltd. from Apotex Holdings Inc. for an undisclosed price.
On October 2, 2015, Stella-Jones Inc. announced that it had completed the acquisition of the shares of Ram Forest Group Inc. and Ramfor Lumber Inc.
Johnson Electric Holdings Limited, a global leader in electric motors and motion subsystems, announced on October 27, 2015, that it had completed the acquisition of Stackpole International, a leading supplier of engine and transmission pumps and powder metal components, primarily for automotive applications.
On July 31, 2015, CRH plc completed its acquisition of certain assets from LafargeHolcim, for an enterprise value of €6.5 billion.
Ashland Inc. successfully completed the divestment of its global Ashland Water Technologies (AWT) business unit to a fund managed by private investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in a transaction valued at approximately US$1.8 billion. Net proceeds from the sale totaled approximately US$1.4 billion, which will be used to return capital to shareholders in the form of share repurchases.
