Dan Hayhurst is the head of the firm's Canadian Pension Practice Group and a member of the Tax Group. His practice covers the entire pension landscape, including advising on governance, fiduciary duties, plan administration and interpretation, investments and investment structuring, custody and other third-party service arrangements and tax issues. He advises clients on the risks and opportunities in the context of transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, plan mergers, wind-ups and conversions, and has provided advice with respect to regulatory examinations/investigations and litigation. Dan has advised a variety of clients, including government, public and private sector plan administrators, trustees/custodians, employers, investment/fund managers, actuaries/consultants and employee groups. He acts for both provincially and federally regulated pension plans in unionized and non-unionized environments that range from individual plans to large single and multi-employer plans. Dan consulted on the drafting of regulations under the Pension Benefits Act (Ontario), both during and after his secondment to the legal services branch of the Pension Commission of Ontario (now the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario). Dan has been recognized in Chambers Canada.
