Jay Zakaïb is an intellectual property litigation partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. Technically trained as a chemical engineer (minor in biotechnology) and legally trained in civil and common law (McGill), Jay has represented numerous innovators and brand owners before trial and appellate courts and administrative tribunals in both official languages for over 15 years. He has represented Eli Lilly, Shire, Allergan, Hoffmann-La Roche, Astellas, Amgen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Actelion, Sanofi, Goodyear, Sofina, Pinnacle, Sobeys, and others. Jay has enforced patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, defended competition law claims, and handled judicial reviews of administrative agencies including the Registrar of Trademarks, the Commissioner of Patents, the Minister of Health, and the Minister of the Environment. As a Patent Agent, Jay advises clients on patent prosecution, regulatory strategies, data protection, certificates of supplementary protection, and pricing. Jay has taught IP at the University of Ottawa for many years, lectured at the Federal Circuit Bar Association Global Series, the Fordham IP conference, and at Bio-Europe. Previously, he worked as a chemical engineer for several companies to support research and manufacturing.
