Michael A. Burns

Michael Burns is a partner in the capital markets and M&A group with McMillan LLP’s Toronto office and co-chairman of McMillan’s investment funds and asset management group. He provides advice on all facets of securities law with a particular emphasis on the structuring and offering of alternative investment funds (domestic and offshore feeder structures), alternative mutual funds, conventional mutual funds, and structured products. He regularly advises portfolio managers, investment fund managers, and dealers in relation to obtaining all necessary registrations to conduct business as well as ongoing regulatory compliance matters. He also provides advice to foreign-domiciled portfolio managers, investment fund managers, and dealers on offering investment services and products to residents of Canada. He served as chairman of the Canadian chapter of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) from 2014–18 and was a member of the Ontario Security Commission’s investment funds technical advisory committee from 2019–21.
