The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) has introduced a new resource aimed at improving the efficiency of legal departments.

The "Core 12 Maturity Assessment Playbook—a Guide to Improving Legal Operations" offers a structured framework for assessing and enhancing operational maturity in twelve crucial areas that align with CLOC’s Core 12 principles.

Jenn McCarron, president of CLOC, emphasized the playbook's importance. “This playbook is the essential how-to manual for deploying the CLOC Core 12, tailored to tackle any mix of challenges and strategies businesses face at different stages of maturity. It’s a game changer,” McCarron said.

The playbook assists legal operations professionals in evaluating their current operations, setting strategic objectives, and implementing improvement plans. It delineates a path through four stages of maturity, helping legal departments to set clear, actionable goals and effectively measure their progress.

Dana Harris and Lindsay Staples, who chairs the CLOC Law Department Maturity Assessment and Planning (LDMAP) Committee, oversaw the development of the playbook. The playbook is the product of a collaborative effort by committee members, contributors, and advisors, including David Areias, Cuong Quach, Kevin Bielawski, Stuart Stogner, Diderico van Eyl, and several others who played pivotal roles.

Lisa Konie, CLOC’s Interim Executive Director, praised the collaborative effort behind the playbook: “This committee embodied a diverse group of experts from across the legal sector. They worked tirelessly to produce a comprehensive and transformative guide for our community. I couldn’t be more proud.”

The playbook release came just before the 2024 CLOC Global Institute in Las Vegas, which was scheduled for May 6-9. During this event, CLOC featured the playbook in a breakout session titled “The CLOC Legal Maturity Assessment Tool – Expert Insights and Hands-On Exercises.” Attendees of this session had the opportunity to participate in the beta version of a new online maturity tool that complemented the playbook, offering a step-by-step assessment process and providing benchmarks against other respondents.
