Al-Nawaz Nanji is a partner in McCarthy Tétrault’s National Tax Group based in Toronto. He has decades of experience advising large corporations on tax disputes and litigation, guiding clients through the complex network of provincial and federal tax laws and helping them strategically secure the most favourable outcomes when dealing with tax authorities. Al-Nawaz is well known for his expertise in matters before the Tax Court, the Federal Court, and appeals courts, providing clients across several industries with strategic and creative insights to effectively navigate tax disputes, including developing creative settlements. His advice covers both income tax and GST/HST tax disputes, as well as administrative and procedural matters, including requirement letters, and privilege considerations. Al-Nawaz obtained his law degree and MBA from the University of Ottawa, and received certification from the CPA in In-depth I, II and III; Corporate Reorganizations; Transfer Pricing In-depth I and II; and GST/HST. He was admitted to the Ontario bar in 2003. He is currently a member of the Tax Court Bench and Bar Committee and is a frequent presenter for the Tax Executives Institute.
