Aria Laskin is a partner at JFK Law LLP. Her practice focuses on Aboriginal, administrative and constitutional law, and advancing Indigenous jurisdiction. Aria specializes in public law litigation on the rights and powers of Indigenous clients, including Aboriginal and Treaty rights, division of powers (Indigenous, Canadian, provincial, and territorial governments), and Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nunavut, and Federal Court, Supreme Court of Canada, and various administrative bodies. Aria supports clients on complex negotiation and governance matters. She has expertise on the implementation of UNDRIP, Indigenous self-determination and law-making in the areas of gaming, education, and child welfare. She is committed to learning and teaching; currently, she co-teaches at Osgoode Law School on the advancement of Indigenous jurisdiction, and has provided commentary on the application of the Charterto Indigenous laws, application of UNDRIP in Canada, and the role of the Canadian legal system – and lawyers – in actively advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
