Benoît Amyot has been practising law for over 25 years. He has developed valuable expertise in Indigenous affairs and civil litigation. Since joining Cain Lamarre in 2002, he has assisted numerous Indigenous communities and organizations in their negotiations with government bodies, as well as in matters related to economic development and governance. Recognized for his innovative and effective approach, he also has expertise in specific Indigenous claims and has successfully secured major agreements for First Nations. Among his notable cases, Mr. Amyot successfully negotiated a regional education agreement with the Government of Canada in 2022 for 22 Indigenous communities, as well as a fishing rights reconciliation agreement for a First Nation in 2019. He has pleaded before the Supreme Court of Canada on four occasions, most recently in 2024 in the case Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan v. Attorney General of Quebec, which clarified the Crown’s duty of honour in negotiations. In addition to his litigation expertise, he is also a guest speaker on various Indigenous law topics and has served as a jury member for Indigenous law moot court competitions.
