Brian Cohen is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Toronto office. Co-leader of the firm’s National Private Client Services Group and a lawyer in the firm’s global Private Client Services Group, Brian assists clients in the areas of estate planning, trusts and personal taxation, in particular, advising high-net worth individuals on succession planning alternatives. He also advises donors, charitable entities, public and private foundations, and not-for-profit organizations regarding the tax implications of formation, registration, governance and planned giving strategies. In addition, Brian frequently advises on estate litigation matters. A frequent speaker, Brian has presented and prepared papers for the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the Ontario Bar Association, the Law Society of Ontario, ILCO, Federated Press, the Canadian Tax Foundation and many others. He is a past recipient of the Ontario Bar Association's Hoffstein Book Prize in Trusts and Estates. Brian has been active in the executive of STEP at both the Toronto and national levels, receiving the Founders Award in 2021.
