Carlos Martins is head of the firm’s aviation and media/defamation practice groups. In aviation, he represents numerous airlines and online travel agents in commercial, regulatory, and liability litigation across Canada, including at the Supreme Court of Canada. He regularly advises clients on regulatory/compliance issues and legal aspects of the day-to-day operations. He is recognized in Lexpert, Best Lawyers in Canada, Chambers Canada Guide, and as a Global Elite Thought Leader in Who’s Who Legal. He is a longstanding contributor to Lexology, a co-author of the aviation chapter of Bullen & Leake & Jacob’s Canadian Precedents of Pleadings, 2nd edition (Carswell) and two chapters of The Montreal Convention: A Commentary (ELGAR). He is a fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada. Regarding media/defamation, he regularly works with Canada’s leading news media outlets in pre-publication/broadcast vetting, pursuing FOI requests for journalists, challenging publication bans/sealing orders, and defending media defamation claims. He has served as Ontario representative for the Canadian Media Lawyers Association and on the Canada Press Freedom Project advisory board at TMU. He mentors student journalists and frequently collaborates with journalism schools at Canadian universities.
