Daphne Maravei is a Principal in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office whose practice focuses on the acquisition, clearance, prosecution, litigation, and licensing of trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and copyright. She also counsels clients on portfolio management and filing strategies. She has experience prosecuting patents in various technical areas, including the energy, life sciences, and medical devices sectors. She successfully manages the portfolios of large companies seeking IP protection worldwide. Her practice also focuses on the business law aspects of intellectual property and includes the transfer of rights. She conducts in-depth IP due diligence in corporate transactions. She is a frequent speaker on a wide range of intellectual property topics. She is involved in many teaching activities. She was recently director of the IPIC/McGill University course titled “Managing Trademark Disputes” and assistant director of the IPIC/McGill advanced trademarks course titled “The Trademarks Practitioner.” She is a member of IPIC, INTA, ECTA, and PTMG. She holds a B.Eng (chemical engineering) and LLB. She is a member of the Ontario bar; a registered trademark and patent agent; and a Fox Scholar, Middle Temple, London, UK.
