Daphne Lainson is a Principal in Smart & Biggar's Ottawa office and national chairwoman of the firm's life science practice. For almost two decades she has focused on securing patent protection for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology related inventions. She advises clients on pharmaceutical regulatory law and gives strategic advice during patent prosecution and following patent grants for pharmaceuticals and biologics. She advises pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies in matters relating to regulatory data exclusivity under the Food and Drug Regulations, supplementary protection under the Certificate of Supplementary Protection Regulations, patent listing under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations, and market access issues, including the pricing of patented medicines under the Patented Medicines Regulations. She is listed annually in The Best Lawyers in Canada and Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars Handbook: Patents. She was awarded Ottawa Business Woman of the Year 2011 by the Women's Business Network of Ottawa. She is an AIPLA fellow; chairwoman of the AIPLA food and drug law committee; a holder of a BSc Hons (chemistry), MSc (chemistry), and LLB; and registered patent and trademark agent. She was called to the Ontario bar in 2001.
