David Bishop is a partner at Gowling WLG and head of Calgary's advocacy group. His corporate/commercial litigation practice focuses on directors' and officers' defence, product liability, professional liability defence (engineers, architects, accountants, etc.) shareholder disputes, class actions, and large property and industrial claims. He has acted on matters in the four western provinces, Ontario, and the three territories. He has appeared in courts at all levels, including courts of appeal and the SCC. He has extensive experience acting for large corporations in the energy sector including disputes arising from valuation of shares, product liability matters, commercial contract claims, and dissenting shareholder proceedings. He regularly defends directors', officers', and companies in class actions, derivative actions, shareholder, and regulatory contexts. He has acted on multi-party product liability cases in various industries including energy, steel, biotechnology, medical, and consumer products. He has been recognized in Chambers Canada and the Legal 500 Canada. He has repeatedly been recognized by Best Lawyers® – in 2020 and 2022 – as Director and Officer Liability “Lawyer of the Year” in Calgary. In 2023, he was similarly recognized in the field of product liability.
