Derek Ronde is Chair of the Class Actions Group at Cassels. His practice is focused on commercial litigation, particularly in the franchising area. Derek has served as counsel for numerous prominent Canadian franchisors and licensors, and he has worked on a variety of high-profile class proceedings, injunctions, appeals, and other litigation matters on behalf of franchise clients. Outside of the franchise field, Derek is experienced in a range of commercial litigation areas including contractual disputes, securities and regulatory litigation, and product liability. He serves as Chair of the Franchise Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA), formerly served on the executive of the OBA Class Actions Section and is a member of the Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) Law Day Committee. Derek is a frequent speaker, chair, and participant at franchise industry events, including the OBA, CFA, American Bar Association, and International Franchise Association. He has also written extensively on franchise- and class action-related matters for the OBA, the CFA, the IBA, and Restaurants Canada. He is recognized as a leading franchise lawyer by Chambers Canada, Best Lawyers, and Who’s Who Legal. Derek was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002.
