Gib van Ert practises civil litigation and public law in Ottawa and Vancouver. He is an acknowledged authority on the application of international law in Canadian courts, and frequently acts in matters at the interface of domestic and international law. Gib’s public law practice includes constitutional challenges, judicial reviews, and statutory appeals. He has also acted or advised in matters involving the regulation of judicial conduct. He often acts as amicus curiae in national security cases before the Federal Court. He is frequently retained in cases raising issues of public international law. He also represents and advises clients on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Gib acts in private law matters concerning estates, contracts, negligence and land. He is plaintiffs’ counsel in a large class proceeding against BC and a Crown corporation. From 2015 to 2018, Gib was the Supreme Court of Canada’s Executive Legal Officer, serving as principal advisor to two Chief Justices. Before that, he clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada (2003) and the Court of Appeal for British Columbia (2001–2). He has a BA (Honours) from McGill, an MA in Law from the University of Cambridge, and an LLM from the University of Toronto.
