Matthew Sherrard is a partner in Gowling WLG's Indigenous Law Practice in Montreal. He works primarily in the areas of Indigenous law and governance, providing strategic advice on a range of matters including health and social services, justice, public security, local and regional governance, as well as commercial, financial and employment matters. Matthew works closely with Indigenous clients on negotiations with provincial and federal governments, nation-to-nation agreements, strategic and business relations, financial administration, board governance and legislative drafting. He helps his clients to navigate complex, changing legal landscapes to leverage their rights and achieve their objectives. Matthew has advised extensively on renewable energy projects, including on Indigenous and environmental matters, power purchase and impact and benefit agreements. Matthew has lectured on Indigenous law matters at the University of Windsor. Prior to his legal career, Matthew was responsible for overseeing and leading international exchange projects across the world and was also involved in a World Bank project in India. He practises law in English and French and speaks Spanish and some Arabic.
