Max Brunette is the employment and labour law department’s practice group leader in Gowling WLG's Vancouver and Calgary offices. He regularly defends employers in wrongful dismissal litigation, labour relations matters, employment standards disputes, human rights complaints, and workplace investigation matters. He also represents employers in collective bargaining negotiations (including those within federal labour guidelines). He advises on the design, interpretation, and enforcement of employment and consulting contracts, termination agreements, workplace policies and handbooks, workplace safety issues, and workplace investigations. He is very familiar with the post-employment duties arising from non-competition and non-solicitation agreements and from an employee's fiduciary duties. He has extensive experience conducting workplace investigations for clients in a variety of industry sectors advising on complaints relating to harassment, discrimination, misconduct, conflict of interest, and policy breach. He works with clients to pinpoint preliminary and ongoing concerns within an organization. He also counsels corporate clients seeking to hire foreign workers. Intact Financial Corporation, through a wholly owned subsidiary, completed its acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of Canadian Direct Insurance Inc. from Canadian Western Bank. The acquisition was financed by IFC exclusively with excess capital. The acquisition enhances IFC’s position in Canada by extending its direct-to-consumer operations from coast to coast.
