Mike has practised energy, commercial, and securities litigation and commercial arbitration in Calgary for over 25 years. He has extensive experience with claims in Alberta’s electricity, petrochemical, and oil & gas industries. Mike has appeared as counsel before all Alberta courts, the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada, and the Alberta and BC Securities Commissions, as well as in dozens of private commercial arbitrations. Mike took a sabbatical from his law practice in 2016–2017 and attended Columbia University, where he earned a Master of Laws degree, was awarded the designation of James Kent Scholar, and published several law review articles. In addition to maintaining a busy practice, Mike has taught effective writing, legal drafting, and written advocacy courses to lawyers and business people in law firms, industry, government, and regulatory bodies. Mike is recognized by Chambers Canada for his commercial litigation work; by TheBest Lawyers in Canada for Alternative Dispute Resolution, Appellate Practice, and Corporate and Commercial Litigation; and by Benchmark Litigation as a Litigation Star. He is called to the Alberta Bar (1996). Mike is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.
