Roberto Tomassini is a partner and the head of the firm's Pension and Benefits Department and Tax Group. He specializes in pension and benefits law, taxation, and compliance for pension plans, employee benefit plans, training funds, and non-profits. He has extensive experience advising sponsors and trustees of health and welfare trusts and employee life and health trusts (ELHTs). Tomassini serves on the advisory board for the Canada Department of Finance, focusing on taxation and regulation of employee benefit plans. He was part of the Koskie Minsky LLP team that negotiated and established the first ELHT in Canada and was closely involved with the drafting of the ELHT amendments to the Income Tax Act, the Ontario retail sales tax and premium tax legislation. He regularly volunteers for the Multi-Employer Benefits Council of Canada, advocating for employee benefit plans. He has written about pension and employee benefits and is one of the editors of Employee Benefits in Canada, published by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (the "I.F."). Tomassini is also an instructor for the I.F. trustee education program, the Foundations of Trust Management Standards (FTMS). He obtained his law degree from the University of Toronto and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1995.
