Rod Northey MA, LLM, is a partner in the Toronto office of Gowling WLG and past head of the firm’s Climate Change and Environmental Law Practice Group in Canada. Certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Environmental Law, Rod’s practice focuses on regulatory approvals and strategies across the full range of approval regimes involving the environment – including environmental assessment, land use, cultural heritage, energy, resource extraction, transportation, waste management, and water approvals. Rod leads legal teams for environmental assessments and related litigation in the transportation, energy and mining sectors across Ontario. He has been involved in dozens of tribunal and court appeals, including more than 50 reported decisions. The federal and Ontario governments have each appointed Rod to expert panels on environmental assessment. Rod has authored five books on federal environmental assessment, including the 2023 Guide to Canada’s Impact Assessment Act (LexisNexis Canada). For more than two decades, he was an adjunct faculty member for various graduate and undergraduate courses. Among other publications, he has been recognized in Chambers Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and the Legal 500 Canada.
