Simon Douville is a partner in McCarthy Tétrault’s National Tax Group in Toronto. His practice focuses on commodity taxation, in particular the application of the GST/HST, Quebec sales tax and other provincial sales taxes. Simon also has considerable experience dealing with insurance premium taxes, land transfer taxes, excise taxes and fuel and carbon taxes. Simon provides astute tax planning advice on corporate reorganizations, M&As and cross-border transactions, and advises businesses on their indirect tax obligations. He also works closely with the firm’s tax controversy and dispute resolution team to help clients navigate tax litigation matters. As well, Simon has significant experience in advising taxpayers in the financial services sector on their HST matters and is one of the leading experts in Canada in this area. Simon frequently speaks on commodity tax issues, including at the Commodity Tax Symposium and the Tax Executives Institute. He was awarded the 2021 Norman Guerin Award for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of commodity tax studies in his paper “Claim me if you can - Financial institutions and ITCs”. Simon holds an LLM in Tax Law (HEC Montréal) and an LLB (Université de Montréal). He is a member of the Quebec bar and the Law Society of Ontario.
