Tom Hunter is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Waterloo Region office and he practises corporate, commercial and technology law. He is the former co-chair of the firm's national Technology Law Group and a past department head of the Waterloo Region Business Law Group. His particular areas of focus include assisting entrepreneurs and owner-operators with start-up and growth-oriented companies, M&A, financing and all aspects of technology commercialization. Tom has served as lead counsel for over $1.5 billion of successful founder monetization and exit transactions for high-tech and traditional economy clients. He serves as a director on the boards of several technology companies headquartered in the Waterloo Region technology cluster. Tom is a frequent guest lecturer on matters ranging from financings to technology commercialization and is a member of the Advisory Council for the Conrad Centre for Entrepreneurship & Business at the University of Waterloo. He has also provided pro bono legal services to not-for-profits and serves on the board of a number of local charities. Tom has long been recognized in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and The Best Lawyers in Canada. He received the Best Lawyers 2021and 2024 Corporate Law “Lawyer of the Year” award in the Waterloo Region.
