Van has been practising insurance defence–related litigation for over 35 years. His practice is wide-ranging and includes catastrophic personal injury claims, trucking related claims, municipal liability, occupiers’ liability, property loss, construction claims, product liability, medical malpractice, and insurance contract claims. Insurance clients have regularly sought his advice in complex legal matters. He is well-versed with clients who have large deductibles or self-insured retentions and the challenges those claims bring, including the impact of those claims on risk management, training, remediation, public relations, and their business model. His years of experience, reasoned approach, and knowledge of the issues involved allow him to steer the litigation towards a resolution and where warranted, trial. He is an experienced trial counsel, having appeared at all levels of the Ontario court system, including the Court of Appeal, and various tribunals and inquests. He has written numerous articles for various publications, and frequently presents as a speaker to insurance clients, individual clients, and the legal profession. As well, he has spearheaded multiple legal compendia on various aspects of transportation and insurance law across Canadian and American jurisdictions.
