The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) has appointed board member Dexter John as its new CEO as of March 1.
John will transition from Morrow Sodali (Canada) Ltd., where he is president and CEO. He has established and managed organizations for over 25 years and brings experience in governance, risk management, and regulatory affairs.
He has chaired the FSRA’s business technology transformation committee and was active in the human resources and governance committee and the statutory funds advisory committee.
“Mr. John's leadership and strategic insight will be invaluable as FSRA continues to modernize Ontario's financial services regulatory framework, engaging collaboratively with FSRA's stakeholders and deliver regulatory efficiency and effectiveness,” FSRA board chair Joanne De Laurentiis said in a statement. “The Board is confident in his ability to build on FSRA's progress and drive forward its ambitious agenda.”
At Morrow Sodali, John advised on corporate governance, ESG initiatives, shareholder engagement, executive compensation, and strategic investor voting analytics. He was also previously senior vice president and executive vice president of D.F. King Canada (formerly CST Phoenix Advisors).
He worked as executive vice president and general counsel at Kingsdale Shareholder Services Inc., where he advised public company issuers and boards on governance matters and corporate strategy.
John also worked at the Investment Dealers Association, the Ontario Securities Commission, and the Toronto Stock Exchange. He gained knowledge of corporate law and governance during his previous tenure with Stikeman Elliott.
John succeeds Stephen Power, who has been FSRA interim CEO since July 2024.
“I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead FSRA and to build on the excellent work of the team in advancing the organization's vision. FSRA plays a critical role in strengthening Ontario's financial services sector, and I look forward to working with our staff, stakeholders, and partners to ensure we continue to deliver on our mandate and create positive outcomes for Ontarians,” John said in a statement.
