The Canadian Bar Association has named Saskatchewan board member Loreley Chekay its vice president for 2025-2026.

Chekay commences in the role in September, with Calgary-based vice president Bianca Kratt becoming president. Chekay will then take the CBA presidency in September 2026.

She currently chairs the CBA Finance Committee, a role she stepped into last year. She is also an executive of the Criminal Justice National Section.

Chekay previously led the CBA’s Saskatchewan branch as president from 2019 to 2020. She also chaired the Saskatchewan Branch Criminal South Section and Young Lawyers Section. Moreover, she was part of the National Sections Executive Committee and an executive of the Young Lawyers Section.

She was nominated by the CBA as a member of the Judicial Advisory Committee for Saskatchewan in 2022-2024. She was also a bencher with the Law Society of Saskatchewan.

Chekay is executive vice president, general counsel and chief risk officer at Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). She focuses on risk, good governance and the integration of legal principles within business areas.

She hails from Australia and holds degrees in applied science and biomechanics as well as in law. After stints at Balfour Moss, now Miller Thomson LLP, she became a Crown prosecutor with the Saskatchewan government and was elevated to senior Crown prosecutor in 2011.

In 2019, Chekay made the move to in-house as the associate general counsel for SGI’s Auto Fund, the same year she took silk. She became a general counsel with SGI in September 2020 and was elevated to executive vice president by October 2021.

In 2023, she received the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal for her volunteer work with sports and community organizations. She continues to serve as a student mentor at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law.

Chekay’s appointment as vice president was announced at the CBA’s annual general meeting on Tuesday. At the same meeting, the association members passed seven resolutions.
