Solink’s General Counsel, Jamie Greenberg, supports a high-growth company at the forefront of data security and privacy. Solink is a cloud-based physical security provider for customers worldwide.
At Greenberg’s company, data and privacy concerns are addressed through robust preventative measures and strict regulatory compliance.
“We don’t just do privacy by design, but it’s security by design as well,” Greenberg explains, emphasizing that security is embedded in every product development process. The company employs encryption across its systems, maintains strict access controls, and continuously monitors for potential threats.
For Greenberg, the goal is to manage current and future risks in the business and landscape in which the company operates.
He underscores this philosophy with a well-known quote: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” reflecting how seriously Solink approaches data protection.
Since Solink operates in various regions, keeping up with different privacy laws is a growing challenge. “We keep a close eye on privacy laws around the world, [such as] PIPEDA in Canada, and Bill 64 in Quebec, as well as GDPR in the EU and UK,” he says. Solink uses GDPR as its guiding principle and localizes its practices as needed. The company's rapid growth, geographically and in terms of product lines, adds another layer of complexity to managing compliance.
“The amazing part about Solink, and the difficult part, is that we’re expanding incredibly quickly,” Greenberg notes. His legal strategy involves working closely with subject matter experts across the globe to stay ahead of local regulatory changes.
“It’s not just privacy laws now; it’s AI laws, commercial laws, the DSA in Europe, and even local tax laws,” he adds. Solink ensures it stays compliant while expanding into new territories by focusing on the most stringent regulations in each jurisdiction.
Solink's expansion also brings challenges around cross-border data sharing. The company relies heavily on transparency to foster trust with customers.
“Solink's philosophy is to ‘Win on Service’ and that means being transparent with customers. We've moved our policies on security and trust to an online microsite, including our DPA and GDPR statements.” Greenberg shares that transparency is key to ensuring customers’ confidence in Solink’s commitment to privacy and security. The company utilizes AWS cloud infrastructure in the EU to store data so that its European clients can adhere to GDPR best practices.
Managing risk is another critical aspect of Solink’s approach to data security. Greenberg highlights the company’s focus on prevention but also recognizes the importance of preparation for potential breaches.
“Everything we do is about earning and keeping trust with customers,” he explains. According to Greenberg, the company’s customer-first mindset, championed by CEO Mike Matta, guides its legal strategies.
Greenberg’s proactive stance extends beyond data privacy and into the future of AI regulation. Solink is increasingly integrating AI into its products, which adds another layer of legal complexity.
“AI will be at the forefront of much of what we do moving forward, both internally to increase productivity and integrated into our products so our customer can leverage AI to their advantage; we’re really leaning on that as a growth vector,” he says.
