On November 14, 2005, Justice Maurice Cullity approved the initial distribution of $7,650,000 of settlement funds to 175 passengers of Air Transat Flight 236 and their families. The flight's emergency landing and evacuation in the Azores in August 2001 ended a 20-minute powerless glide caused by a massive fuel leak and loss of power in both the aircraft's engines.
The class action on behalf of the passengers sought damages against Air Transat A.T. Inc. (the airline), Airbus GIE (the aircraft manufacturer) and Rolls-Royce (the aircraft engine manufacturer).
On behalf of the passengers, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice appointed, as class counsel, Glenn Grenier, Allan Dick and Mark Mason of Goodman and Carr LLP, and J.J. Camp, Q.C., and Joe Fiorante of Camp Fiorante Matthews in Vancouver.
