Peter Giddens is co-leader of McMillan’s intellectual property group and a partner in the Toronto office. He counsels clients concerning the acquisition, clearance, management, protection, enforcement, licensing, and transfer of IP. In his brand and content protection practice, he advises clients concerning the availability of trademarks for use and registration, prepares and prosecutes applications to register trademarks and copyright, and manages domestic and foreign trademark portfolios. He represents clients in contentious matters such as trademark and copyright infringement proceedings, trademark opposition and expungement proceedings, and domain name disputes. He assists clients with drafting and negotiating agreements concerning the ownership of IP rights, protection of confidential information and trade secrets, and licensing of IP. He frequently advises on IP issues in complex business transactions and commercial disputes. He serves on the CIPO-TIDB Director General’s advisory committee and is a past chairman and current member of INTA’s trademark offices practices committee. He appeared before the House of Commons standing committee on industry, science and technology as an expert witness concerning amendments to the Trademarks Act and Copyright Act.
