The Intellectual Property Ontario Network (IPON) has expanded its eligibility criteria to include cleantech, agriculture and food technology, and mining technology.

The move aims to provide more comprehensive support to Ontario-based innovators and researchers seeking to protect and commercialize their intellectual property (IP).

Dan Herman, CEO of IPON, expressed confidence in the expanded focus. “Expanding our eligibility to include cleantech, agriculture and food technology, and mining technology ensures that IPON is positioned to support innovation and growth in every region of the province,” Herman said. He emphasized that Ontario’s innovators are well-positioned to meet the growing global demand for products and services in these critical sectors. “IPON’s support for the protection and commercialization of their IP will help ensure that we maximize the benefits for Ontario and its residents,” he added.

Since its launch in 2022, IPON has played a key role in fostering innovation across Ontario. The agency currently serves 529 clients and has been instrumental in helping to secure 477 patents, 240 trademarks, 29 industrial designs, 89 IP-centric agreements, 8 trade secrets, and 2 registered copyrights. Beyond this, IPON has provided foundational IP education to 357 individuals, issued 354 micro-credentials, and delivered over 1,000 hours of direct mentorship in intellectual property matters.

IPON’s funding has also been critical in supporting the commercialization efforts of 272 clients, eight colleges, and twelve universities across the province. By expanding its focus to include new sectors, IPON aims to extend its reach and impact, helping Ontario innovators and researchers protect their ideas and grow their businesses.

“Ontario innovators have an immense opportunity to meet growing global demand for products and services in these sectors,” Herman remarked.

The agency encourages innovators and researchers in all served sectors that meet IPON’s eligibility criteria to apply for IP services and support. By extending its support to these vital sectors, IPON aims to foster a stronger innovation ecosystem across Ontario.
